THE STORY OF THE UU FELLOWSHIP
OF BOCA RATON, FLORIDA

The UU Fellowship of Boca Raton, Florida, came to be on a path similar to ours, but not through anything of our doing.

The first record of action leading to formation of a Unitarian Fellowship in the South Palm Beach County area was in 1961. A news release was prepared for the Sun-Sentinel by an unidentified "publicity chairman."

In it "people with liberal religious views" were invited to hear Monroe Husbands, Fellowship Director of the then American Unitarian Association of Boston, Massachusetts, on the topic "Who Are These Unitarians?" The meeting was to be held Sunday, March 19, 1961, at the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce.

A series of meeting followed in private homes. At the first, the Rev Walter C. Jolly of the Unitarian Church in Fort Lauderdale led the discussion. Interest grew, and in September, a congregation of 22 members applied for membership in the newly formed Unitarian Universalist Association.

At the inaugural service, October 14, 1961, the UU Boca Raton joined the Unitarian Universalist Association, and one of the speakers was Fred Stanton then president of the Florida Conference of Liberal Churches.

The UU Boca Fellowship has had an exciting history, parallel to our own. Do drop by for a visit, and tell them we sent you.
