FILLING AN EMPTY BOWL

EMPTY BOWLS EVENT RAISES OVER $ 4,500 FOR THE HUNGRY

Thanks to the efforts of the Interfaith Coalition to End Hunger and its four participating Churches and Temples that host the annual empty bowl dinner event, a check for $ 4,500 was presented this week to The Cooperative Feeding Program to feed the hungry of southern Florida.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Ft. Lauderdale created the event in 2002, and it has since expanded to include several other religious groups. Some of those now participating groups are Temple Etz Chiam, Temple Adath Orr, Trinity Lutheran and the River of Grass Unitarian Universalist Church in Davie.

Every April since then, hand made soup bowls sold at this annual event to symbolize and remind us of the fact that many people in our community go to bed hungry every day. The Cooperative Feeding Program, the principal beneficiary of the event, serves close to one million meals each year through its Community Kitchen and Emergency Pantry programs.

Several schools also joined in the event this year, including the South Plantation High School's Leadership Class, which raised $ 1,869 to fight hunger through the sale of empty bowls they made at the school.
