Rummage Sale
Hurray! So far, the church made $1,972.67 at our last rummage sale, and we still have one big-ticket item to sell on eBay. This is over 82% better than we did last year. Most of the proceeds from selling your generous, tax-deductible donations came from buyers outside the church, simultaneously enriching their lives and ours. Items that the church needed went to Building and Grounds and Religious Education, and our teens got a huge rear projection TV. Lori Gold took unsold children's items to Hispanic Unity's Nuestras Familias program. Silver Nightingale took unsold craft items to Trash to Treasure re-use center. Punctual as always, Salvation Army picked up the rest. Each buyer received a flyer describing upcoming church activities such as Labyrinth Café concerts, Green Spirit/Green Space conference, and Winter Psychic Faire. On the back is a description of our principles and sources of faith. I took out ads in the Sun-Sentinel and Lake Emerald condominium’s monthly newsletter. Susan F. and Mary B. touted the sale on our sign; we put a sale banner on NW 21st Ave., ran free ads on Craig’s List and Backpage.com/New Times, and Susan Moss informed everyone on the e-mail list of GotFolk.com. I heard from a satisfied buyer that during the sale someone from the church was even directing drivers on NW 21st Ave. to come inside. Great job! We all—-I in particular-—owe amazing Susan Friend a huge debt of gratitude for taking the time from her busy schedule to call people and ask them to help out at the rummage sale. As a result, the roster of participants is a veritable Who’s Who list of cool people. I want to thank Building & Grounds for supplying us with breakfast, Gary Ladka for humorous and informative announcements and lively music to shop by, and the following people for selflessly donating their time transforming the sanctuary into a rummage sale room and back again; donating, hauling, sorting, displaying, pricing, or selling items: Virginia & Erik Anderson, Mary Bardis, Jenetta Baxter, Dorothy Bellick, Shirley Braunstein, Phoenix Cockerham, Bill Cox, Evelyn Fecci, Susan & Doug Friend, Lori Gold, Dave Griswold, Ann Hill, Pat Huey, Judy Knopp, Gary Ladka, Steve & Laura Lange, Molly & Alan Lesnick, Susan Moss, Mara Newman, Lois Nikula, Mary O’Connor, Kevin Oscar, Paula Patton, Douglas Paul, Monica Pavlik, Judy Pine, Colette Saucier, Nicole & Frank Shulman, Frank Solis, Kris Stewart, Mary Jane Stone, Myra Symons-Kazanci, Noralee Traylor, Ivor Vidal, Sandy W., Jerry Waltz, and Mark Woodpecker. If I accidentally omitted your name from the list and you helped with the sale, please forgive my fatigue, faulty memory, or lack of awareness. Thanks, everyone, for putting the fun back into fundraising and making this event profitable.
P.S. This year’s best rummage sale story is about Kevin Oscar. During the last moments of the sale, he bought over 100 books at a really great price. How is that speed reading class working out for you, Kevin? ;-) |
