UU Sisterhood at Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Lauderdale

Meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Sunday at 9:30 am sharp and all women are welcome.

The latest incarnation of the UU women's group started about four years ago by two young single mothers, Rita Goodwin and Collette Ann Marquis. They felt the need for support and mentoring from other women.

UU Sisterhood A covenant was developed and endorsed by the group. It covered privacy issues, leadership skills, support and respect for each woman's story.

We use an ancient American Indian custom of the Talking Stick. This custom of the woman holding the Talking stick, allows each one to tell her story without interruption or critique. The "power" of the Talking Stick encourages a hesitant sister to speak out boldly and tell her story. The other sisters listen attentively and say in unison "we hear you!!" The Talking Stick is then passed on.

The leadership roles of the group are shared with all the members. Each leader, sometimes with a partner, is responsible for choosing the topic and format. This process allows each sister, no matter how shy or insecure to learn and practice leadership skills. From the covenant: "we will respect the discussion leader as the one to guide the discussion and lead the group back to the topic as needed."

Some of the recent topics have included discussion and practice of meditation; the effect of commercialism on women; how do women deal with fear and anger? (This was a really big one); Haiku poetry and other interesting ideas. All the topics engender excitement and involvement by the group.

The women's group is opened to all sisters. We have grown so well that soon we may consider two groups.

The agenda of the meeting starts with 10 minutes of business to decide next leader and topics for discussion. After the business portion, a chalice is lit and each sister checks in. Checking in consists of sharing as much as one feels about their immediate life adventures.

We pledge to respect privacy, thereby creating a safe place to tell our stories. WE WILL NOT GOSSIP.
