THE STORY OF THE UU SOCIETY OF MIAMI

The UU Society of Miami began in the 1930's.

For several years, a group of New England Residents and snow birds met in private homes. On April 30, 1938, at the second of two organizational meetings, 52 persons joined and elected officers and were accepted by the American Unitarian Association as a "mission church.".

They met in a movie theater and other rented spaces. During Word War II they were the only white church that would let black soldiers attend services.

Property was acquired for a church building to be located in downtown Miami. Before construction could begin, the land was taken over for the new interstate highway. Thus, the move was made to the present location in the "suburbs," and the present building that was dedicated December, 1962.

During the 60's, the congregation was deeply involved in the civil rights movement. Many joined as they participated in this social action.

The Miami UU Society has a long and impressive history. Do drop by for a visit, and tell them we sent you.
