Children's Religious Education Topics at
Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Lauderdale (UUCFL)

Our curriculum is based on the Principles and Sources of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Principles Underlying Our Faith

Sources

We affirm and promote:
  1. That each and every person is important

  2. That all people should be treated fairly and kindly

  3. That we should all accept one another and learn together

  4. That each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life

  5. That all persons should have a vote on things that concern them

  6. Working for a peaceful, fair and free world

  7. Caring for our planet earth, the home we share with all living things

Unitarian Universalism draws from many sources:
  • Direct experience of wonder

  • Words and deeds of prophetic women and men

  • Wisdom from the world's religions on ethics and spirituality

  • Jewish and Christian teachings of love

  • Humanist teachings of reason

  • Teachings from earth-centered traditions on harmony with nature

The Great End in Religious Instruction

Our children learn about the scriptures, deities, holy days and customs of a variety of world religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Taoism, and Native American religions.

Our children also learn that belief in God is not necessary for living a good and meaningful life.

Through these studies, we show our children that there are many spiritual paths that people take to find meaning, and no one path works for everyone.

"The great end in religious instruction
is not to stamp our minds on the young,
but to stir up their own;

Not to make them see with our eyes,
but to look inquiringly and steadily with their own;

Not to give them a definite amount of knowledge,
but to inspire a fervent love of truth...

Not to impose religion upon them
in the form of arbitrary rules,
but to awaken the conscience, the moral discernment...

In a word, the great end is to awaken the soul..."

-- William Ellery Channing (1839)
